Finding Information About Asthma

There are several places where you can get information about asthma. And empowering yourself with learning as much as you can is a great step in gaining a sense of control over a condition that often seems to control you, not the other way around.

And perhaps more importantly, having the right information can arm you so that you know what to do in certain situations, to protect your health, or that of your loved ones.

So, what are the best places to find information about asthma?

Your doctor should be the first port of call, and remains the absolute best source of information. They should be able to answer your questions. And they may even have some tips on how to keep safe. Nutrition and exercise are two areas they should be able to advise you on, with particular reference to living with asthma.

Sometimes though, it helps to do a little bit of research ourselves, especially if we are under the care of a GP and not a specialist. General practitioners are extremely busy and have to deal with a wide range of ailments, so they may not be experts on the latest research about asthma, or alternative treatments that have gained credibility.

And perhaps just as importantly, finding information about asthma online can let us read how others manage their asthma. In a way, as well as giving us insight into what their doctors have told them, it also lets us share in their own research, potentially saving a lot of time and pain. And reading about how others are dealing positively with the challenges in their life can really buoy us in staying positive about our own.

Reading about other people's experiences can make us feel less alone. There is a great sense of comfort to be gained from realizing that others are also going through these experiences. It can help us overcome that sense of difference we may feel sometimes when comparing ourselves with people who don't have asthma.

Sometimes too, we find that there are pressures and feelings we aren't really aware we have around the complications of asthma. There may be unspoken fears, or worries. By learning about what can be expected, and the best way to handle certain scenarios, we can really put these fears to rest.

As far as medications, it is important that your doctor is consulted before you change them. There may be things you're not aware of, or issues with coming off medications, that your doctor can help you understand.
